The IRS is reminding all truck and bus operators that the deadline to file Form 2290, the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax Return, is quickly approaching. This year, the deadline falls on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, for vehicles that were first used on public highways in July 2024. Typically, the deadline is August 31, but since that date is a Saturday this year, the deadline has been extended to the next business day.
Who Needs to File Form 2290?
The Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax applies to vehicles with a gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more that are registered or required to be registered under the law. This includes most large trucks and buses.
The key thing to remember is that you must file Form 2290 by the last day of the month following the month in which the vehicle was first used on a public highway during the tax period, which runs from July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2025. For example, if you started using a new vehicle on the road in July 2024, you need to file Form 2290 and pay the applicable tax between July 1, 2024, and September 3, 2024.
Filing Requirements and Tips
If you put a taxable vehicle on the road after July, the tax will be prorated based on the number of months the vehicle is in use. To help you figure out your specific filing deadline, the IRS provides a handy table on its website.
The IRS strongly encourages taxpayers to e-file Form 2290. E-filing through an IRS-authorized provider allows you to receive a stamped Schedule 1, which serves as proof of payment, in just minutes once your return is accepted. This stamped Schedule 1 is necessary for vehicle registration and for bringing Canadian or Mexican vehicles into the United States.
While e-filing is recommended for all taxpayers, it is mandatory for those with 25 or more vehicles registered in their name. Additionally, if a vehicle is expected to be used for 5,000 miles or less (or 7,500 miles for farm vehicles), you still need to file a return, although no tax will be due. However, if the vehicle exceeds this mileage limit during the tax period, the tax will become payable.
As the deadline draws near, be sure to take the necessary steps to file your Form 2290 on time to avoid penalties and ensure your vehicle remains compliant with IRS regulations.
